From the audit room to your side of the table

Former donor audit specialists - your secret weapon for grant compliance and audit readiness

Why we created GAPS

A person with short, dark hair and a mustache is wearing a light blue collared shirt and is covered with numerous sticky notes on their face and upper body. The notes contain various words and symbols related to work, relaxation, and personal care, such as 'rest,' 'calm,' 'stop,' 'sleep,' 'take a break,' and symbols like checkboxes, hearts, and dollar signs.

We've seen countless successful projects undermined by the expectation gap between organisations and donors. Unclear eligibility rules, gaps in evidence and last-minute document scrambles can mean sizeable recovered funds, damaged donor relationships and team stress and burn out.

We created GAPS to change that

We help organisations manage their donor’s requirements meaning that, with far less time wasted, and with far less stress created, your teams can focus more on project delivery and impact.

Most accounting and audit advisers work with donor funded grants as a secondary service to their core work. We have worked exclusively as auditors in the donor sector with a combined experience of more than 40 years.

We have worked with EU, UN, and GIZ donor programmes across thousands of engagements, giving us a comprehensive understanding of what strong compliance and best practice looks like. That means we can help you build clearer evidence trails, strengthen controls before problems arise, and reduce the disruption that audits can too often cause.

Why clients choose us

We combine technical expertise with a practical style of support. We do not overcomplicate compliance. We want our clients to feel supported rather than overwhelmed, providing exactly the level of service they need, when they need it.

Our approach

Alex Martins-Craig FCA

Director

After years leading donor audits, Alex kept asking the same question: why are successful organisations still being hurt with preventable issues when it comes to their audit? And why isn’t there anyone with experience helping them? Alex helped found GAPS because he believed there had to be a better way to help - one that got alongside organisations long before the auditor arrived, not when the damage is already done.

Having spent his career on the other side of the table, he saw a clear gap in the sector - there is simply no other firm out there like this, led by people who have actually run these audits and know exactly what donors and their auditors are looking for.

Our team has a combined experience of more than 40 years as auditors in the donor sector. We have a comprehensive understanding of several major donors including the European Commission, the United Nations and leading Government Organisations.

The depth of our knowledge makes our support genuinely unique in the donor sector. We are not generalist audit advisers who have just read the guidelines. We have sat on the other side of the table, written the findings, and delivered the audit reports to donors, and know exactly what a well-prepared grant file looks like compared to one that is not.
